Biography
Ted Winn, once one half of the gospel duo Ted & Sheri alongside Sheri Jones-Moffett, has built a profile as a contemporary gospel singer and songwriter through his later solo work. He has also earned recognition behind the scenes for his efforts in publishing and copyright administration on behalf of fellow musicians.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Winn began piano lessons in childhood and later enrolled at the city’s Overton High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, participating in its choir program as well. Following graduation and a stint in the Air Force, he returned home and became a member of the Dove Award-nominated ensemble Kevin Davidson & the Voices (then known as Kevin Davidson & the Voices of Binghampton), where he first encountered Sheri Jones-Moffett. The two launched Ted & Sheri in 1995 even as they continued performing with other local gospel choirs. In 1999 the pair signed with Church House Records, and their 2001 debut, The Healing Starts Right There, earned Stellar Awards for Group/Duo and New Artist of the Year. The duo next moved to Word Records for their follow-up album, Celebrate, issued in 2004; its title track peaked at number 14 on the Billboard gospel songs chart, while the project itself reached the gospel Top 30.
After that sophomore success, Winn established Veracity Entertainment to assist songwriters with intellectual-property matters. The duo subsequently separated to focus on individual paths, with Jones-Moffett joining EMI Gospel and Winn aligning with Shanachie Records. His first solo project, the worship album Balance, appeared in 2009. During the same period he gained notice as a songwriter whose material appeared on releases by T.D. Jakes, Tamala Mann, and Youthful Praise, and whose compositions were later interpreted by Marvin Sapp, Tonya Baker, and Bishop Paul S. Morton; he maintained his involvement with Veracity throughout. Winn resumed recording in 2015 with the single “More,” issued on his own Teddys Jamz imprint. Returning to Shanachie, he released “Grateful,” featuring Maranda, in 2016, followed by “Stand in Awe” in 2017.
