Biography
Michigan-based pastor and vocalist Marvin Sapp, previously part of the acclaimed gospel ensemble Commissioned, launched his independent recording path during the middle of the 1990s. His fervent vocal style and resonant timbre frequently incorporate R&B phrasing alongside smooth-jazz textures, thereby forging an inviting medium for conveying messages of belief. Across his career he has delivered numerous best-selling projects such as Be Exalted (2005), the gold-certified Thirsty (2007), Close (2017), and Substance (2022), collecting several Dove and BET honors in the process. That broad resonance has also generated eleven Grammy nominations. Sapp has periodically rejoined Commissioned alongside fellow gospel figure Fred Hammond, one such occasion being the 2006 release Praise & Worship.
While still largely unrecognized, Sapp was invited to join the historic gospel collective Commissioned and remained with them until the group disbanded in 1995; he then inaugurated his solo discography with a self-titled album the next year. Raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he later established the JOY Ministries outreach, Sapp entered the Commissioned lineup in the early 1990s following Keith Staten’s departure for a solo trajectory. Alongside Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Mike Williams, and Karl Reid he contributed to the albums Number 7 and Matters of the Heart. Once Hammond and Williams departed, Sapp participated in the ensemble’s concluding project, the 1996 set Irreplaceable Love. By then he had also secured a solo agreement, resulting in the March 1996 appearance of his Word Records debut. That effort reunited him with former Commissioned colleague Fred Hammond, who served as producer, and yielded the gospel successes “Calling Me” and “In His Presence.” His second release, Grace & Mercy, surfaced in May 1997, with Nothing Else Matters arriving two years afterward.
Following a brief hiatus from recording, Sapp signed with Versity Records and introduced the track “I Believe” via the WOW Gospel 2002 compilation before issuing the full-length I Believe later that year. Diary of a Psalmist emerged in 2003, Be Exalted in 2005, and the gold-selling Thirsty in 2007. Here I Am, which entered the Billboard charts at a higher position than any gospel album in half a century, appeared in 2010 and was succeeded in 2012 by I Win, a number-one entry on the Billboard Top Gospel Chart. His tenth studio album, the chart-topping You Shall Live, arrived in 2015. In 2017 Sapp collaborated with R&B singer R. Kelly on the single “Listen,” later included on his eleventh project, Close, released that September. The live recording Chosen Vessel came out in 2020, and two years afterward he delivered Substance, his fifteenth studio album.
