James Fortune recognizes that conveying themes of redemption to contemporary listeners requires a theatrical approach, resulting in albums that function as lively urban gospel, hip-hop, and soul showcases staged with polished entertainment flair, featuring his own spoken, sung, and shouted exhortations. From the release of his debut full-length You Survived in 2004 onward, he has ranked among the leading figures in modern gospel music. In addition to multiple chart-topping gospel singles, he earned two Grammy nominations, both tied to Identity in 2012. Entering his third decade of releases, he issued Dream Again (Live from Rock City) in 2020, followed by My Life in 2022 and the EP Worth It in 2023.

Born on November 29, 1978, in Richmond, Texas, Fortune grew up immersed in church life because his father served as a pastor, and he began playing drums at age five. After completing studies at Kempner High School in Sugar Land, Texas, and later at Cal State Northridge, he took the position of choir director at Dimension Church in Houston. Equally skilled as a preacher, choir director, master of ceremonies, and worship coordinator, Fortune excels at delivering gospel and praise material to younger audiences in the 21st century. Through his accompanying ensemble FIYA (an acronym for “Free in Yahweh’s Abundance”), he integrates hip-hop structures and contemporary urban rhythms into his work.

He built his reputation through a steady sequence of projects: You Survived in 2004, The Transformation in 2007, Encore in 2010, and both Identity and Grace Gift in 2012. Identity received a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Album, and its hit single “Hold On,” which featured Fred Hammond and Monica, was nominated for Best Gospel Song. His debut live recording, the two-disc Live Through It, arrived at the start of 2014. Later in the decade he released Dear Future Me and Dream Again, both featuring appearances by Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Kierra Sheard, Deborah Carolina, and Lisa Knowles Smith. In 2020 he followed with Dream Again (Live from Rock City), then issued My Life two years afterward, spotlighting the energetic track “Never Let Me Down.” His subsequent effort, the seven-song EP Worth It, appeared in 2023 and again paired him with Monica along with rapper Waka Flocka Flame and Zacardi Cortez, delivering a set of uplifting praise songs meant to assure audiences that their challenges remain “worth it.”
