Biography
Kierra Sheard, known in the early stages of her career as Kierra "Kiki" Sheard, secured Grammy and Dove Awards as a gospel performer whose style incorporated current R&B and hip-hop flavors. Her first album, the 2004 release I Owe You, climbed to the summit of Billboard’s gospel albums chart. She sustained her standing among leading gospel figures yet crossed into the Billboard 200’s Top 40 via consecutive projects, 2011’s Free and 2014’s Graceland. Her sixth studio effort, 2020’s Kierra, included a contribution from Missy Elliott. On the 2023 album All Yours she again merged gospel themes with hip-hop and R&B rhythms in a self-assured collection.
Born in Detroit in 1987, Sheard is the daughter of Karen Clark-Sheard, the gospel singer recognized for her tenure with the Clark Sisters, and Bishop J. Drew Sheard, an author, speaker, and worship leader. Her grandmother, Mattie Moss Clark, earned recognition as a choral director of note. Immersed in a musical household, Sheard began performing as a child and made her first recorded appearance at age ten, adding guest vocals to a pair of tracks on her mother’s initial solo album, 1997’s Finally Karen. One selection, “The Will of God,” captured a Stellar Award for Best Children’s Performance, while the other, “The Safest Place,” gained steady gospel-radio airplay. She soon contributed backing vocals alongside her mother, the Clark Sisters, and her aunt Dorinda Clark-Cole.
Sheard secured a contract with EMI Gospel in 2003; I Owe You appeared in September 2004. The album achieved both critical praise and sales success, reaching the top of the gospel chart and number 29 on the R&B/hip-hop tally. A remix collection, Just Until…, arrived in August 2005, and its reworked version of “Let Go” by the Godson Complex turned into a significant hit in Japan. Shortly after finishing high school, Sheard issued her second full-length album, This Is Me, in June 2006; it debuted at number one on the gospel chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album. Bold Right Life followed in October 2008, the same month she supplied guest vocals on Mary Mary’s single “God in Me,” which became a notable gospel success. The 2009 compilation Kiki’s Mixtape gathered previously unreleased material with remixes and fan favorites.
In 2010 Sheard took on minor parts in the faith-based films Preacher’s Kid and Blessed and Cursed. Her fourth studio album, Free, surfaced in 2011 on Karew Records, the imprint long associated with the Clark Sisters and Karen Clark-Sheard; the project also introduced the BRL Choir. April 2013 saw the premiere of the BET reality series The Sheards, which chronicled the Clark and Sheard families both onstage and off. Graceland, released in July 2014, marked her fourth gospel chart-topper. The eight-track EP LED followed in November 2015, and she appeared on the 2018 holiday project A Karew Family Christmas. Her sixth album, simply titled Kierra, featured appearances by Missy Elliott, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Todd Dulaney; it debuted at number one on the gospel chart, displacing Kanye West’s Jesus Is King after a six-month run. On 2023’s All Yours, Sheard worked with J. Drew Sheard II, Adia, Pastor Mike Jr., Jekalyn Carr, Anthony Brown, Mali Music, Anita Wilson, and Jor’Dan Armstrong to craft an assured, uplifting set of songs that crossed gospel boundaries.
