Biography
During his teenage years, Byron Cage drew inspiration from vocalists such as Rev. Donald Vails and Thomas Whitfield when he first took up gospel singing. He later served as music director at New Birth Church in Atlanta before becoming minister of music at Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington, MD. In the mid-'90s he assembled his nine-vocalist ensemble Purpose and, alongside the group, issued three distinctive live albums of spirituals: Transparent in Your Presence, Dwell Among Us, and The Prince of Praise. Five Stellar Awards went to his 2003 Prince of Praise, while his 2005 release An Invitation to Worship earned a 2006 Grammy nomination. Live at the Apollo: The Proclamation appeared in 2007, Faithful to Believe followed in 2009, and Memoirs of a Worshipper arrived in 2012.
