Biography
Maurette Brown Clark emerged as a contemporary gospel artist near the close of the twentieth century, establishing herself as a vocalist, songwriter, and arranger who also directs a thriving music management enterprise. This assured and consistently optimistic multi-talented figure has collected multiple Stellar Awards while guiding two projects—1998’s How I Feel and 2011’s The Sound of Victory—into the Billboard Gospel Top Ten, alongside the chart-topping single “I Want God” from 2019. Following an extended hiatus from album-length work, she resurfaced in 2024 with the buoyant He Loves Me.
Raised on Long Island, Clark began singing at age four and commenced private instruction at six, later appearing regularly with her family gospel group and various high school and college vocal ensembles. Once established professionally, she provided backing vocals for leading gospel figures including CeCe Winans and Hezekiah Walker and served as the featured singer on Richard Smallwood’s hit “Angels.”
Her solo career opened in 1998 with How I Feel, issued by Verity Records; the album reached the upper tier of Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart, earned a Dove Award nomination, and brought her the 2000 Stellar Award for Best New Artist. Throughout the following ten years she maintained a steady presence in gospel circles, issuing well-received sets such as 2002’s By His Grace and 2007’s The Dream on the Atlanta International label. Her fourth album, 2011’s The Sound of Victory, achieved her strongest chart placement to that point, climbing to number six on the gospel tally.
Thereafter Clark stepped away from album production, surfacing from time to time with successful singles including 2015’s “King Oh King” and 2019’s “I Want God.” She also founded her own management and booking company, Nettie’s Child, handling both external clients and her personal affairs. In 2024 she ended the thirteen-year gap with the eight-song collection He Loves Me.
