Biography
Powerfully voiced Australian folk artist Grace Cummings draws acclaim for her commanding stage presence and fiercely introspective compositions. Emerging rapidly inside Melbourne’s indie circuit, she secured a deal with Flightless Records, the imprint that put out her first album, Refuge Cove, toward the end of 2019. For her second record, Storm Queen, she aligned with the U.S. label ATO Records in 2022. On her expansive third album, 2024’s lavish Ramona, Cummings collaborated with acclaimed producer Jonathan Wilson.
Delivering poetic reflections over spare arrangements that shift between urgent strumming and gentle fingerpicking, she evokes the early-’60s folk revival through throaty vocals, acoustic guitar, and harmonica. A Facebook clip of her performing Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” quickly attracted Flightless Records—the Melbourne label operated by psych favorites King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard—shortly after she started playing local shows. Early in 2019 she was already supporting J Mascis and Do Re Mi on regional dates while preparing her debut. Issued that November, Refuge Cove captured a vintage analog warmth and framed her earthy folk material in an expansive, all-acoustic environment. Late in 2021 she joined the roster of American imprint ATO Records, which issued the follow-up LP in January 2022. Retaining the debut’s organic character, Storm Queen expanded the sonic palette with varied textures and instrumentation to support her turbulent material. For the 2024 set Ramona she enlisted producer Jonathan Wilson (Margo Price, Father John Misty) to craft dramatic songs that juxtaposed opulent orchestral arrangements against her assured storytelling and powerful vocals.
