Born on 2 July 1945 in Stratford, London, England, vocalist Bonney had previously sung with the Expresso Five before producer Larry Page selected him as one of six young players to launch the Riot Squad. After three singles failed to register, he quit the band and launched his solo path in November 1965 via the single ‘My Little World Is All Blue’. The follow-up, ‘Supergirl’, defined his polished pop style; although the track only just reached the UK Top 20, it dominated the German charts for six weeks, moved more than a million copies, and established his European profile. A debut album reinforced that promise, yet further strong singles never restored the same momentum. Within Germany, however, he remained a consistent presence, placing 14 singles inside the national Top 50 from 1966 through 1973 before settling in Cologne.
