Known for his adaptability as a guitarist, Greg Koch has applied his skills across a range of television and radio commercials, written pieces for various guitar magazines, and worked as an instructor with Fender while also releasing personal recordings. His fascination with Jimi Hendrix began early, leading him to start playing the instrument himself by age 12 and quickly accompanying tracks from broadcasts and recordings. Mastery of multiple genres including rock, blues, country, and jazz allowed Koch to establish Greg Koch & the Tone Controls, which gained popularity in their native Milwaukee. In the closing years of the 1990s, he put out Defenestrator in 1998 along with Past and Present two years later, eventually inking a deal with Favored Nations—the imprint founded by Steve Vai—and delivering The Grip in 2001.
