Justin Broadrick earned considerable esteem among devotees of extreme music through his Jesu output during the 2000s, yet that same body of work gradually distanced him from the raw, abrasive guitar textures long linked to his contributions in the industrial-metal pioneers Godflesh. Determined to reaffirm that side of his musical identity for both himself and his audience, he launched Greymachine as a vehicle for unfiltered aggression. Core participants Dave Cochrane, previously of God and Head of David, and Diarmuid Dalton from Jesu came aboard early; later Broadrick sought to broaden the project's sonic reach by recruiting Isis guitarist Aaron Turner. Turner agreed, instantly elevating expectations for Greymachine's first release, since a partnership between two such pivotal figures in contemporary metal had previously existed only as an unrealized prospect. Issued on Turner's Hydra Head imprint in mid-2009, the resulting album Disconnected delivered on that anticipation.
