Biography
The Toronto quartet Greys adopts the plain self-description of a "loud band from Toronto." This four-piece crafts an aggressive yet refined blend of post-punk and noise rock that reached its peak with the widely praised 2016 album Outer Heaven. Their thoughtful and reflective method kept developing over the following years, resulting in the 2019 release Age Hasn't Spoiled You.
Singer/guitarist Shehzaad Jiwani, guitarist Cam Graham, bassist Colin Gillespie, and drummer Braeden Craig formed Greys in 2011 and issued their initial EP, Ultra Sorta, that year. A second EP, Easy Listening, arrived in 2012 as the band refined its approach through both studio work and live appearances across North America. In 2013 the group partnered with Brooklyn's Kind of Like Records to deliver its heavy third EP, Drift, before completing the debut full-length, If Anything, which Carpark Records of Washington, D.C. issued in 2014. The 2015 EP Repulsion followed, spotlighting the singles "Voyeur" and "I'd Hate to Be an Actor."
On the sophomore album Outer Heaven the musicians substantially broadened their palette with tape loops and synths while introducing greater maturity, all without sacrificing their original drive. Recorded at Montréal's historic Hotel2Tango studios, the facility long associated with Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mount Zion, the set appeared in April 2016. They issued the companion piece Warm Shadow that October. After a stretch devoted to separate endeavors, Greys returned to the studio to translate the unease and turmoil of their newsfeeds into Age Hasn't Spoiled You, their most ambitious and tonally varied album to date.
