Biography
Groove Theory formed as a duo pairing Amel Larrieux, a New York native who had worked as a songwriter and session vocalist, with Bryce Wilson, previously a rapper in Mantronix. The two crossed paths in 1991 via a shared acquaintance, each feeling constrained by prior roles in the industry: Larrieux lacked the acrobatic range associated with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, while Wilson sought an outlet for his production skills that had gone untapped. Discovering complementary ambitions, they began collaborating creatively and launched the project under the name Groove Theory in 1993. Its sound favors a restrained approach relative to typical hip-hop, centering on themes of romance and sensuality. The self-titled debut album arrived in 1995.
