Grrrl Gang channels noise pop that balances confrontation with warmth while intertwining political statements and intimate themes, drawing equally from classic indie pop and the riot grrrl ethos. The Indonesian group presented their first full-length, Here to Stay!, in 2019 as a self-curated gathering of earlier material. They later aligned with Kill Rock Stars to issue their second album, Spunky!, in 2023.

The band originated in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, during 2016 amid the decade’s political turbulence, when college students Angeeta Sentana on lead vocals and guitar, Edo Alventa on guitar, and Akbar Rumandung on bass came together to form the project. Early tracks such as “Dream Grrrl,” “Pop Princess,” and “Guys Don’t Read Sylvia Plath” were gathered by Damnably for the Here to Stay! collection, which introduced the act to a wider international indie audience upon its December 2019 release. Their SXSW debut followed in 2021 as a virtual set necessitated by pandemic conditions. By then the members had finished their studies and relocated to Jakarta for regular employment. On Spunky!, their first release for Kill Rock Stars, Grrrl Gang sustained the blend of jagged punk edges and unfiltered melodic indie pop, delivering the album in September 2023.
