After completing theological studies at the University of Vienna and the University of Prague, Gorczycki earned a doctorate from one of the two schools. He took charge of the Wawel Cathedral chapel in 1698 and continued in that post until his death. During the Baroque era he stood as the leading exponent of Polish music. Liturgical masses formed the core of his output, yet he also produced an overture and a polannaise for instruments. His works combined established vocal polyphony with concertato procedures, exchanges among instruments, and alternations between solo lines and the full ensemble.
