Gun Outfit coalesced in Olympia, Washington, during 2007 under guitarists and vocalists Dylan Sharp and Caroline Keith. The band first operated as a trio alongside drummer Reuben Storey without a bassist, shaping an early style that merged '80s post-punk with fuzzy lo-fi guitar rock and landed between the initial SST Records releases by Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. and the early K Records output of Beat Happening. Their debut EP appeared in 2008 through the Los Angeles indie label Post Present Medium. Dim Light, the group’s first full-length, arrived the following year, its dueling boy/girl vocals and noisy textures prompting comparisons to early Sonic Youth. By the arrival of their third album, 2012’s Hard Coming Down, a more pastoral sensibility with undercurrents of folk, country, and psych had begun to surface. That year the musicians left the Pacific Northwest for Los Angeles, adding bassist Adam Payne in the process. After signing with the North Carolina indie Paradise of Bachelors, Gun Outfit issued their most understated album to date, 2015’s Dream All Over. Five months later came the five-song EP Two Way Player. Recorded with Henry Barnes of Amps for Christ and Man Is the Bastard, the band’s fourth long-player, Out of Range, surfaced in October 2017 and extended their dreamy desert psych direction.
