Biography
Heather Woods Broderick crafts indie folk songs whose soft, ethereal layers draw from natural settings and periods of quiet introspection. Operating as a touring sideman and session player from her Brooklyn base, she has worked alongside Sharon Van Etten, M. Ward, and Laura Gibson. Her first solo release, the spare acoustic From the Ground, appeared in 2009; subsequent records such as 2019’s Invitation and 2023’s Labyrinth incorporated electronics into her contemplative style.
Born and raised in Maine, Broderick relocated with her musician parents to Oregon at age eight. A multi-instrumentalist who began piano lessons shortly after the move and continued through college, she performed during the 2000s with Loch Lomond, the indie folk collective Horse Feathers, and the post-rock ensemble Efterklang. In 2009 she recorded her debut solo album, From the Ground, produced by her brother, the composer, musician, and engineer Peter Broderick; Preservation issued the album in Australia, with Digitalis Recordings handling a vinyl edition the next year. Around the same period she contributed to projects by M. Ward and Blitzen Trapper, among others.
Her playing surfaced on Nightlands’ 2013 album Oak Island and on Sharon Van Etten’s 2014 release Are We There and 2015 EP I Don’t Want to Let You Down before her own second album, Glider, arrived on Western Vinyl in 2015, introducing atmospheric electronic elements. She also maintained an active touring schedule supporting Van Etten, Laura Gibson, and Damien Jurado.
Later in the decade Broderick appeared on recordings by Dave Depper and In Tall Buildings while adding synthesizer, Wurlitzer, and backing vocals to Van Etten’s January 2019 album Remind Me Tomorrow. Three months afterward Western Vinyl released Invitation, written and inspired by time spent in the coastal town of Pacific City, Oregon—a childhood summer destination for the Broderick family—where she further developed her electronic palette. She next issued the cello-drone recording Domes on the Dauw tape label in 2022, then returned to Western Vinyl for her fifth studio album, Labyrinth, in April 2023, continuing to integrate electronics and understated rhythms within her atmospheric songs.
