Biography
The Hebrides Ensemble earned the description “one of the great glories of Scotland” from Peter Maxwell Davies. Concentrating on contemporary repertoire, the group has placed more than seventy commissions, a large share of them with Scottish creators. Besides Maxwell Davies, those invited to write for the ensemble include Sally Beamish, John Bevan Baker, Lyell Cresswell, Hafliði Hallgrímsson, Edward Harper, Helen Grime, David Horne, Sir James MacMillan, Stuart MacRae, John McLeod, Gordon McPherson, Peter Nelson, Alasdair Nicolson, Alasdair Spratt, William Sweeney, and Martin Suckling. First performances of the resulting scores have taken place at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, London’s King’s Place, the Wigmore Hall, the Aldeburgh Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival.
Established in 1991, the ensemble maintains a schedule of appearances at halls and festivals throughout the United Kingdom and continental Europe, and its concerts have been aired regularly on BBC Radio 3. A nomination in the Chamber Music Category at the 2009 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards recognized its work. In 2001 the players recorded a disc of Cresswell’s music for NMC; further releases have appeared on the Linn and Delphian labels, the latter issuing The Last Island—a collection of Maxwell Davies chamber pieces—in 2017. The group’s discography also extends beyond Scottish composers: an album of Messiaen works was issued by Linn in 2008. On stage the musicians frequently juxtapose established repertory with recent scores in order to illuminate both.
Exploration of digital platforms forms a central part of the ensemble’s effort to widen access to new music. During 2015 it became the first professional ensemble to link performers in Edinburgh with colleagues in London and Italy simultaneously and in real time. Marking its twenty-fifth anniversary the following year, the organization introduced a comprehensive digital plan that makes every performance available globally through live streaming and complementary technologies.
