Born in England in 1956, Helen Terry first rose to notice singing backing vocals during Culture Club’s breakthrough year of 1983. She accompanied the band on extensive tours until internal problems involving finances and substance abuse brought about its dissolution. She later expressed strong indignation at Boy George’s claim in his autobiography that she had been the one who introduced him to drugs.

Her own recordings began soon after the group’s demise, appearing on its former label Virgin Records. The resulting album Blue Note failed to find an audience, prompting a move to EMI Records, where she issued the singles “Fortunate Fool” and “Lessons In Loneliness.” When that label sought to steer her unfinished follow-up toward a stronger dance focus, Terry abandoned the music business altogether. Drawing on her earlier experience in animation, she shifted to television, beginning as a researcher and later serving as assistant director on Channel 4’s Friday At The Dome before turning freelance.

Her subsequent musical contributions were confined to a guest vocal on Holly Johnson’s “Legendary Children” and recording sessions with Kevin Mooney, formerly of Adam And The Ants. She also directed a documentary about the Pretenders and contributed to several music-related charity broadcasts, with particular emphasis on AIDS awareness initiatives.
