HEXA emerged from an experimental partnership linking Australian composer Lawrence English with Jamie Stewart, frontman of Xiu Xiu. Their initial encounter occurred in 2009, after which they maintained contact through ongoing exchanges of concepts and occasional face-to-face encounters across subsequent years. The pair made their debut appearance under the HEXA name in 2015, generating shadowy, immersive sonic environments to accompany Between Two Worlds, a display of David Lynch's visual works hosted at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art. Once the exhibition concluded, a restricted cassette edition appeared via English's own Room40 imprint. Room40 followed this in 2016 with the duo's Factory Photographs LP, while the Gallery of Modern Art arranged a further program combining the pair's compositions with Lynch's photographic pieces, slated for 2017.
