Emerging initially under the name Hott Waxx during the first years of the 1970s, the British funk ensemble later adopted the Hi-Tension moniker. Founding members comprised lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and keyboardist David Joseph, bassist Ken Joseph, guitarist Paul Phillips, percussionist Jeff Guishard, saxophonist Paul McLean, drummers David Reid and Paapa Mensah, trumpeter Guy Barker, trombonist Peter Thomas, and saxophonists Bob Sydor and Ray Alan Eko. Their lively and occasionally memorable style produced little response across American audiences, yet yielded solid results throughout Britain. Late-'70s dance success arrived with the English hits "Hi-Tension" and "British Hustle." An updated roster brought the act back on Streetwave during the mid-'80s. Ken Joseph, Leroy Williams, and Jeff Guishard sought to revive the earlier momentum, though a pair of singles issued in 1984 and 1985 generated only limited progress.
