Hierophants formed as an Australian quartet in 2010 once guitarist Zak Olsen relocated to the Southern Australian city of Geelong. The lineup also includes drummer Jake Robertson (who simultaneously plays with Ausmuteants), keyboardist Paris Richens, and bassist Daff Gravolin. Their sound centers on jittery, nervous post-punk and new wave-inflected indie rock, built from straightforward, catchy compositions that layer buzzing organ beneath a light coat of echo while the lyrics channel stress and frustration.

After issuing a 7" EP plus several split cassettes on Anti Fade Records in 2012, the band eased its output as Ausmuteants issued multiple well-received albums and singles. Hierophants resurfaced in 2014 with a pair of 7" singles, “Nothing Neu!” on Goodbye Boozy Records and “Pneumatic Drill” on Moontown Records. Goner Records, the American label home to Ausmuteants, signed the group and put out the 7" “I Don’t Mind” in early 2015. October saw the arrival of their first full-length, Parallax Error, issued jointly by Goner Records and the Melbourne-based imprint Aarght! Records.
