A bluegrass ensemble rooted firmly in tradition, High Fidelity crafts performances that echo the sonic character and spirit of landmark acts from the 1950s and 1960s, including Jim & Jessie, the Louvin Brothers, and the Stanley Brothers. Their shows nevertheless project an energetic freshness born of youth, sharpened further by instrumental command and vocal blend. The group first drew widespread attention within bluegrass circles through the 2018 album Hills and Home, which illustrated their distinctive blending of earlier and contemporary elements.
High Fidelity came together in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2014, taking their name from a phrase that frequently appeared on bluegrass albums of the 1950s to highlight advances in recording technology. Each of the five members already possessed substantial background in the field. Lead vocalist and guitarist Jeremy Stephens had performed with Jesse McReynolds & the Virginia Boys as well as a later incarnation of the Chuck Wagon Boys. Fiddler and harmony singer Corrina Rose Logston had shared stages with Stephens in Jesse McReynolds’s band, supported Jim Lauderdale, and issued a solo recording. Banjoist Kurt Stephenson first attracted notice in 2010 by winning the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Bassist Vickie Vaughn’s prior work included tenures alongside Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless. Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Amick, who contributes mandolin, banjo, guitar, and harmony vocals, received the IBMA’s Instrumentalist of the Year Momentum Award in 2019.
The band quickly established itself through regular appearances in Music City and captured first place in the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America’s International Band Championship during its inaugural year. Their self-released debut, Hi-Fi Bluegrass, arrived in 2016 and received favorable notices from bluegrass publications, prompting a contract with Rebel Records. Hills and Home became their first Rebel release in 2018; its reception earned High Fidelity an IBMA nomination for New Artist of the Year in 2019. The group followed with its third album, Banjo Player’s Blues, in 2020.
