Jonathan Clancy divides his efforts between fronting the chamber pop outfit A Classic Education and co-hosting a daily broadcast on Bologna’s Citta del Capo station, while also crafting his own dreamy lo-fi material as His Clancyness, at first working entirely solo. After issuing covers of the blog favorites Nite Jewel and Wavves, he began attracting online attention. His first release, the Hissometer Cassette, took three years to complete and appeared in a limited edition on Secret Furry Hole Records in 2009. A run of singles came next as Clancy continued to split his schedule between His Clancyness and A Classic Education, performing live with both projects. For those shows his usual backing group consisted of friends Giulia Mazza on keyboards, Emanuela Drei on bass and vocals, and Jacopo Borazzo on drums. FatCat signed His Clancyness in March 2013, issuing the Charade EP shortly afterward and the album Vicious that October. Cut in Detroit under producer Chris Koltay, Vicious marked Clancy’s clearest-sounding work to that point and introduced additional players—Borazzo and bassist Paul Pieretto—for the first time.
