Biography
Hollenthon emerged chiefly as the creative outlet of Martin Schirenc, the frontman of Pungent Stench, who contributes guitar, bass, and keyboards while also managing vocals and production. The project fuses black and death metal with orchestral synthesizer passages, choral arrangements, folk-derived melodies, cinematic scoring references, and additional textures, yielding a distinctive yet grandiose and forceful aesthetic. Schirenc first explored the concept in 1994 by contributing to an Austrian black metal compilation under the moniker Vuzem. Several years later he assembled a debut album, enlisting drummer Mike Groeger, and issued the recording as Domus Mundi in 1999 through France’s Napalm Records. The album earned enthusiastic notices throughout Europe and within the broader international metal underground, although American distribution was delayed until late 2000. Hollenthon’s follow-up, With Vilest of Worms to Dwell, appeared on the same label in 2001.
