Biography
Humberto Ramirez demonstrates versatility across trumpet performance, arrangement, and composition, moving fluidly between straight-ahead Latin jazz on his Tropi-Jazz solo projects and production or arranging duties for major Latin dance artists such as Tony Vega, Johnny Rivera, and Brenda K. Starr. He launched his professional path as a trumpeter in salsa legend Willie Rosario’s band before shifting into arranging responsibilities as well. Once Rosario’s 1986 LP Nueva Cosecha earned a Grammy nomination, Ramirez received offers to produce broader mainstream acts including Tony Vega and Gilberto Santa Rosa, another Rosario alumnus; he accepted and updated the signature salsa texture by adding extra horns and keyboards. The revised approach scored widespread success, especially for Vega, which in turn earned Ramirez his own solo recording contract. His subsequent releases have alternated between traditional Latin jazz and a more romantic strain of the dance music he had earlier shaped.
