Biography
Ian Broudie earned his greatest visibility as frontman of the British pop band the Lightning Seeds, though he also stood among the era’s most accomplished post-punk producers. Born on August 4, 1958, in Liverpool, England, he first surfaced as a member of Big in Japan, an outfit that emerged from the same local circuit responsible for Echo & the Bunnymen, the Teardrop Explodes, and Icicle Works. Once Big in Japan disbanded in 1979, Broudie completed a brief stint in the Original Mirrors before producing the first two Echo & the Bunnymen albums, Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here, plus additional sessions for the Fall, Wah!, and Frazier Chorus. He next resumed performing for a short period as half of the duo Care. He subsequently fronted the Lightning Seeds, a project that functioned essentially as a solo venture augmented by studio musicians; the international hit single “Pure” appeared on the group’s 1989 debut, Cloudcuckooland. In the years that followed, Broudie continued moving between his own recordings and outside production, overseeing work by the Primitives, Sleeper, Alison Moyet, and the Frank & Walters.
