Originally recognized for guitarist John Squire's work after the Stone Roses split, the Seahorses carried forward the sound of the band's final album by favoring straightforward rock over the dance-tinged Brit-pop that defined the group's earlier period. Squire assembled the lineup in 1996, less than a year after the Stone Roses dissolved, recruiting vocalist/guitarist Chris Helme, bassist Stuart Fletcher, and drummer Andy Watts; the band's name rearranges to spell "he hates roses." The group entered the studio with legendary producer Tony Visconti, resulting in the June 1997 release of Do It Yourself, which drew mixed critical responses. Following an international tour that included multiple shows supporting Oasis, the Seahorses returned to recording their follow-up album, only for Watts to exit. A replacement arrived promptly, yet the band lasted just one album before dissolving in February 1999 amid creative differences between Squire and Helme. Although a full album of songs had been tracked, none of the material ever appeared. Helme went on to pursue a solo career, whereas Squire has stayed out of the spotlight ever since.
