Emerging from Sheffield in 1994, the Britpop group Longpigs assembled around vocalist Crispin Hunt, guitarist Richard Hawley, bassist Simon Stafford, and drummer Dee Boyle, delivering a sound marked by melodic flair alongside energy, grit, and arrogant airs. Scarcely months after their opening show, a major label signed them, yet the band felt devastated when that company collapsed, since any replacement would need to pay £500,000 to extract them from the existing deal. U2's Mother Records then intervened with substantial funding, securing Longpigs a fresh agreement under the Mother banner. The single "Far" reached the U.K. Top 40 in early 1996, after which "On and On" entered the Top 20. Their debut album, The Sun Is Often Out, appeared in the U.K. during April 1996 and reached America less than twelve months afterward. Longpigs also shared stages with U2, supporting the headliners on chosen dates of the 1997 Popmart Tour.
