In the early 2010s, standup comedian Ian Karmel rose to prominence in Portland, Oregon, his native city, thanks to his sharp comedic takes on topics like junk food, relationships, and his identity as a non-religious Jew. His improvisational comedy skills were honed through work with the Upright Citizens Brigade and the Groundlings. Local comedy contests fell to him, culminating in the title of Funniest Person in Portland for 2011, which led to gigs at comedy festivals throughout North America as well as spots on Portlandia and the Travel Channel program Best Sandwich in America. Relocating to Los Angeles positioned him as a writer and frequent contributor to E!'s Chelsea Lately, followed by his first late-night television appearance on Conan O'Brien's program during 2014. His signing with Kill Rock Stars paved the way for the November 2015 launch of his initial album, the hipster-baiting 9.2 on Pitchfork.
