Biography
Ike Reilly spent the 1980s and 1990s drifting through successive groups without lasting traction until the following decade, when he surfaced as a gritty, street-smart rock & roll provocateur. The Chicago-based singer and songwriter built a loyal audience with his unsentimental portraits of fringe characters and hard-luck relationships, most notably on the two early albums he recorded alongside his band the Ike Reilly Assassination—Sparkle in the Finish in 2004 and We Belong to the Staggering Evening in 2007. He later delivered equally sharp solo statements, including Born on Fire in 2005 and the biting Because the Angels in 2021.
Raised in Libertyville, a northern suburb of Chicago, Reilly began developing his musical abilities while still in middle school, where he first sang and played guitar; by age thirteen he was already performing for pay. Following college and a period of officer training in the Marine Corps, he gigged throughout the Chicago scene with acts such as the Celtic rock band the Drovers and led his own groups, the Eisenhowers and Community 9. During the 1990s he stepped away from music entirely for a stretch before reentering the industry in 1997 as a production assistant. By the close of the decade he was again writing and recording, now focused on a solo singer-songwriter approach. Those early sessions, captured with engineer Ed Tinley, secured a deal with Universal Republic Music and resulted in his 2001 debut, Salesmen and Racists. Already approaching forty, Reilly infused the songs with hard-won perspective, pairing sardonic commentary and shady protagonists with garage-rock drive and punk edge.
The Universal arrangement produced only that single record; in 2004 Reilly moved to the Nashville indie Rock Ridge, assembled the Ike Reilly Assassination, and released their first joint effort, Sparkle in the Finish, a cohesive and assured collection that crystallized his vision. He continued refining that approach through the rest of the 2000s, crafting narrative-driven songs marked by humor, warmth, and conviction. Two further band albums appeared—Junkie Faithful in 2005 and We Belong to the Staggering Evening in 2007—before he issued the 2008 rarities collection Poison the Hit Parade and the 2009 studio set Hard Luck Stories under his own name. During this period he also developed an AMC television pilot that was never green-lit.
Although Reilly kept working with the Assassination, later releases appeared solely under his name. Born on Fire arrived in 2015 after a six-year absence and received strong notices; its title track reached a wider audience when it was featured in a documentary on the late comedian Chris Farley. Crooked Love followed in 2018, and in 2021 he released his eighth album, Because the Angels.
