Jacopo Peri stood out as a gifted Italian musician and creator whose early training centered on the organ, yet his singing possessed an emotional depth capable of moving listeners to tears. He mastered the chittarone as well and joined forces with leading figures such as Corsi, Caccini, and Gagliano. Peri produced multiple operas and theatrical songs in recitative form, seeking to mirror the natural cadence of speech through musical lines. Once this approach proved effective, he extended the technique to choral passages, strophic songs, and additional recitatives. Over the course of his career he served as organist, as singer and composer at the Medici court, and in a court role at Mantua, while his first appointment placed him among the singers at S Giovanni Battista. Two of his landmark operas were “Dafne” and “Euridice.” The melodic writing in the former unfolds at a measured pace that nonetheless foreshadows features found in Peri’s later pieces, supported by robust accompaniments. “Euridice,” by contrast, conveys the full dramatic arc of its narrative through music and remains the earliest opera whose complete score survives. Peri displayed a sharp instinct for revealing the dramatic architecture of any libretto while conveying a wide range of feelings through his settings.
