Biography
Swiss-born and raised in the U.K., this creator of immediate, emotionally charged indie rock in the mold of Foals and the Strokes has also built a substantial following as an online personality known for sharp cultural observations and incisive critiques. His channel already counted two million subscribers when his first full-length effort, the 2023 album Are We There Yet?, arrived.
Marriott came into the world in 1997 and grew up in Buckinghamshire, England, beginning grammar school in 2008. That year he posted his initial forays into animation online. By 2012 his attention had turned to music, prompting him to upload clips of his acoustic instrumental performances. After a period at a Wiltshire college he entered UCL in London, where he pursued a BA in Modern Languages with a concentration in Spanish and Portuguese. Six months of the program took place in Granada, Spain; following graduation he relocated to Brighton on England’s southern coast. By then he had become a recognizable online figure, offering commentary on pop culture and music reviews to an audience exceeding one million.
His first significant move into recorded music came with the May 2020 single “Slow Down,” a synth-heavy track drawing on 1980s yacht rock. January 2021 brought the more guitar-led EP No Left Brain. The standalone July 2021 release “Wake Up!” evoked Bastille alongside the pop-leaning aspects of Foals. The June 2022 EP Bitter Tongues referenced 2000s indie acts such as Maximo Park and the Whitest Boy Alive yet closed with the disco-inflected “Grapes.”
Those recordings paved the way for his inaugural U.K. headline tour, undertaken with a full band in February 2023. The following month he supported Jake Bugg at the Royal Albert Hall. In May he appeared at the Great Escape festival in Brighton and later opened for Two Door Cinema Club in Leeds, a group he has long admired. Ahead of the album’s release, the singles “So Long,” “Romanticise This,” and “Don't Blame Me” were issued; afterward he performed in Brisbane and Sydney. Upon returning, Are We There Yet? entered the Top 20 of the U.K. album charts.
