Conan Gray is recognized for a lively yet frequently somber sonic palette that blends elements of dance music with introspective indie pop sensibilities. He first gained traction through digital platforms back in 2013 via a popular YouTube presence. Gradually this drew a committed viewership interested in glimpses of his personal experiences alongside his self-written tracks that incorporated both acoustic and electronic touches. A selection of these compositions, among them "Generation Why" and "Crush Culture," was compiled for the Sunset Season EP in 2018. Kid Krow marked his initial full-length effort in 2020, achieving a peak position of number five on the Billboard 200. Additional releases followed in 2021 such as "Astronomy" and "People Watching," paving the way for Superache, his second album rich in emotional depth, which once more entered the upper echelons of the Billboard 200. Found Heaven, his third studio album drawing from '80s synth pop aesthetics, came out in 2024.

Born during 1998 in Lemon Grove, California, Gray was raised within a family blending Irish and Japanese roots. Periods of his childhood were also spent in Hiroshima, Japan, accompanying his parents as they attended to his grandfather. Following the dissolution of his parents' marriage, he relocated to Texas alongside his mother, and by the age of 15 he had initiated his YouTube channel under the original moniker ConanXCanon. Through uploads of personal video logs, artistic pursuits, and acoustic renditions of existing material, he cultivated a steadfast audience that eventually surpassed 900,000 subscribers. Comparable achievements materialized across Instagram, Twitter, and SoundCloud.

Upon completing secondary education, Gray shifted his base to Los Angeles and began studies at UCLA. His digital footprint expanded further as he incorporated original pop material into his output. The earliest examples, such as "Those Days," "Lovesick Boys," and "The Other Side," remained minimalist, emphasizing his vocals with ukulele or guitar accompaniment. However, the 2017 offerings "Grow" and "Idle Town" signaled an evolution toward richer arrangements that integrated synthesizers and subtle electronic elements. Sunset Season, his first EP, appeared in 2018 and highlighted the tracks "Generation Why" and "Crush Culture."

During the course of 2019, Gray put forth multiple singles like "Checkmate," "Comfort Crowd," and "Maniac," all of which featured on Kid Krow, his debut album produced by Daniel Nigro. Issued in March 2020, this project performed well on the Billboard 200 by reaching number five and received endorsements from Taylor Swift and Elton John. Adhering to a similar pattern for his next project, he previewed Superache through online drops including "Astronomy" and "People Watching" throughout 2021. Once more under Nigro's production, the album emerged in June 2022, allowing Gray to broaden his musical approach by merging catchy pop elements with unflinchingly autobiographical explorations of mistreatment, early-life hardships, and romantic loss.

In 2023, Gray put out the upbeat synth-driven track "Never Ending Song" along with the poignant ballad "Winner," ahead of previewing Found Heaven via the early 2024 single "Lonely Dancers." Collaborating with figures including Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, and Ilya, he unveiled his third full-length album Found Heaven during March 2024, which attained number 14 on the Billboard 200.
