Electro-pop performer Shy Martin initially drew notice through her behind-the-scenes work penning Chainsmokers' "All We Know" and Mike Perry's "The Ocean," after which she stepped forward as a recording artist in her own right. Polished arrangements paired with plentiful relaxed melodies helped distinguish her output, and projects such as the 2020 EP Sad Songs alongside numerous stand-alone tracks accumulated millions of streams, paving the way for her first full-length effort, Late Night Thoughts, which arrived in 2023.

Residing in Stockholm, Sweden, the artist born Sara Hjellström secured her earliest success by composing "Perfect Touch" for Josh Phillips in 2015. The major breakthrough arrived with Mike Perry's "The Ocean," a domestic chart-topper across Sweden in 2016 whose momentum prompted her to issue material under her own name beginning in 2017 with "A Little Longer," soon followed by "Good Together." Recognition came via a Grand Prize at that year's Denniz Pop Awards, and she appeared on Timeflies' successful "Raincoat" before dropping additional solo releases in 2018 that included the charting tracks "Forget to Forget" and "Lose You Too." Those cuts were gathered together on the six-song EP Overthinking, issued in December 2018 and rounded out by the extra track "Spaceship." Fresh material surfaced in 2019 with "Out of My Hands," "Same Old," and "Make Us Never Happen," while she joined Boy in Space on several collaborative numbers that same year. Her second EP, Sad Songs, followed in 2020, and she kept releasing singles into 2021 such as "Remember You Were the One" and "Feelings."

The title track of her debut album Late Night Thoughts was unveiled as a single in February 2023, with the full project appearing that May and showcasing the performer tempering her melodic sensibility with greater emotional directness in the writing. The set also contained the single "Wish I Didn't Know You."
