Biography
British singer/songwriter and vlogger Dodie first attracted widespread attention through a combination of introspective acoustic material and inventive social-media engagement. Following the 2016 release of her debut EP, Intertwined, she shifted toward gentler, more introspective material on subsequent projects, notably the 2019 EP Human, which reached the U.K. Top Five. Her inaugural full-length album, Build a Problem, appeared in 2021 and entered the U.K. Top Three; the EP Hot Mess followed a year later.
Dorothy Miranda Clark, raised in Epping, Essex, first drew broad notice in her late teens by chronicling personal experiences online while also pursuing acting and live performance. Central to this activity was her songwriting, which soon linked the artist—known publicly as Dodie—with the baritone ukulele and original compositions exploring love, loss, and longing. Rapid online growth led her, in 2016, to begin work on Intertwined; issued independently that November amid rising visibility, the EP entered the Top 40 in both the U.K. and Ireland and prompted nationwide live dates. She later secured a place on the Transatlantic Tour, appearing in the U.S. with fellow internet personalities Jon “Paint” Cozart, Rusty Clanton, and Tess Violet.
Dodie issued her second EP, You, in 2017. The set introduced a more delicate and reflective sonic approach than before, incorporating sustained viola lines, inward-facing lyrics, and spare piano. Listeners responded, sending You to number five in Ireland, number six in the U.K., and number 17 in Australia. Over the following two years her style continued to evolve with the quieter, more contemplative singles “Human” and “If I’m Being Honest,” both featured on the 2019 EP Human, which reached number five on the U.K. album chart.
Working alongside producer Joe Rubel (Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters) and Pomplamoose, Dodie delivered her first studio album, Build a Problem, in March 2021; it debuted at number three in the U.K. Culminating nearly ten years of songwriting, the fourteen-track set included “Boys Like You,” which charted inside Scotland’s Top 100. To promote the record she resumed daily vlogging after a five-month pause. Roughly a year afterward she unveiled the track “Got Weird,” later included on the September 2022 EP Hot Mess, co-produced by Dodie and Peter Miles (Torres, Dry the River).
