Biography
British pianist James Rhodes has earned widespread attention through his unconventional recital concepts, direct interpretive approach, and albums that frequently lead the iTunes classical rankings, as well as through the volumes he has published. Born in London on March 6, 1975, he first encountered his father’s recording of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 (“Emperor”), which prompted him to request piano lessons that initially yielded little advancement. Between the ages of 14 and 18 he worked with Colin Stone, made stronger progress, and secured a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1993, only to set the instrument aside for the next decade.
Hoping instead to work as a music agent, he contacted Italian representative Franco Panozzo, who urged him to pursue performance and organized additional instruction. Rhodes gave his first recital at London’s Steinway Hall in 2008. The next year he was featured in a BBC documentary marking the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth, and in 2010 he joined the Warner Bros. roster—the first classical pianist taken on by the company’s rock division.
He has sustained an active touring calendar that has taken him to Barbados, Hong Kong, and Chicago’s International Beethoven Festival, while also performing in rock venues and at events such as the Latitude Festival, where he became the first classical pianist to appear. His releases often carry distinctive titles, as with the 2010 album Bullets & Lullabies, yet the programs themselves center on core repertoire extending from Bach through the late Romantics. Most of his discs have appeared on the Signum Classics label, including the 2018 release Fire on All Sides.
Beyond the stage and studio, Rhodes has contributed articles to London’s Telegraph and The Guardian, directed a documentary on a scheme that redistributes unused instruments to British schoolchildren, and hosted his own television series. He is the author of three books—an autobiography, a manual on piano playing, and the 2018 volume Fire on All Sides. Both his recordings and his publications have reached the top of the charts, and a screen version of his autobiography was slated for 2020.
