James Yuill merges acoustic instrumentation and electronic processing into a hybrid approach that helped define folktronica within alternative and indie pop circles. He shaped this sound through acoustic guitar, vocals, a laptop, and an eclectic set of reference points that includes British folk figures such as Nick Drake, experimental rock acts like Radiohead, and electronic dance outfits including the Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin. While celebrated for his solo performances, Yuill also earned recognition for remixes created for Au Revoir Simone, Reverse Migration, Tilly and the Wall, David Holmes, and Rod Thomas.

He first released music in 2005 with The Vanilla Disc on his own imprint. Two years afterward he issued Turning Down Water for Air, which Moshi Moshi—a London label known for its roster of prominent indie artists—reissued in 2008. That same year British outlets such as NME, Dazed & Confused, and Clash covered his work, with the last of these naming him Best Newcomer. Additional U.S. festival appearances broadened his reach, and Nettwerk Music Group signed him late in 2008.
