Dutch pop and schlager performer Jan Smit first achieved major commercial breakthrough in 2005 thanks to Vrienden Voor Het Leven, the reality television series centered on his everyday existence, yet he maintained strong sales momentum afterward and established himself among the most dependable and commercially consistent Dutch pop acts of the 2000s. His peak-selling releases arrived in the aftermath of that program, above all jansmit.com in 2005, Op Weg Naar Geluk in 2006, and Stilte in de Storm in 2008, each attaining multi-platinum certification inside the Netherlands.

Although his debut single “Ik Zing Dit Lied Voor Jou Alleen” appeared in 1997, Johannes Hendricus Maria Smit was then only twelve. One year prior he had already gained prominent exposure on the BZN hit “Mama,” after which he promptly joined the Mercury roster. Later releases appealed to listeners in both the Netherlands and Germany, though his earliest and strongest traction occurred in the latter market. Following a period of elevated visibility in the early 2000s, his profile began to plateau until TROS launched the reality series Vrienden Voor Het Leven in 2005. The program proved popular, restoring Smit to full superstar standing. Between 2006 and 2007 he secured four consecutive number-one singles, among them “Als de Morgen Is Gekomen,” “Cupido,” and the title track from Op Weg Naar Geluk. His albums likewise dominated the Dutch charts and earned platinum awards or higher.

Smit maintained a regular presence on TROS, frequently hosting his own well-received programs, and in 2012 he took a role in the World War II drama Het Bombardement. While his albums kept reaching the top of the Dutch charts, he resumed German-language work in 2013 with Ich Bin Da. The 2014 album Jij & Ik occupied the Dutch summit for three weeks, and 20, released in 2016 to mark twenty years in the music industry, held the top position for two weeks.
