Biography
At the age of six, London-born Janek Schaefer produced his initial sound collage, titled "Journey," thereby launching an early practice of musical deconstruction. Following studies in architecture at Manchester Metropolitan University, he advanced his sonic explorations through the work "Recorded Delivery," which first appeared at a London exhibition curated by Brian Eno and Laurie Anderson. That composition drew on edited material captured by a voice-activated recorder sealed inside a package that journeyed via the British postal network. A 7" single edition of "Recorded Delivery" later appeared. Throughout the late '90s, live performances and site-specific installations multiplied alongside multiple cassette issues.
In parallel, Schaefer conceived and constructed distinctive instruments, among them a three-armed "tri-phonic" turntable together with refined techniques for vinyl mastering. Field recordings also served as a recurring compositional resource. These strands coalesced in the 2000 debut album Above Buildings, issued by Fat Cat, whose abrasive yet luminous textures placed him alongside abstract practitioners such as Fennesz and Oval.
