Biography
Dimitris Papadatos, a Greek composer and sound artist, records his distinctive experimental dub under the name Jay Glass Dubs. He layers abstract, fractured rhythms through a mix of digital and analog gear, pulling production approaches from musique concrete, '80s pop, shoegaze, and further sources. The project's earliest cassettes, later gathered on the 2017 compilation Dubs, centered on dense yet stripped-down beats, while later works such as the 2018 release Plegnic introduced denser textures and occasional vocal parts.
Papadatos has made music since the early 2000s. From 2008 onward he issued improvised pieces as the Hydra, moving across fractured techno and atonal compositions. He also formed the experimental pop project Ku, which applied oblique strategies and set Papadatos' own poetry as lyrics. Following a limited cassette in 2010, Ku's debut album Feathers appeared in 2013.
Jay Glass Dubs surfaced in 2015 through cassettes on labels including Bokeh Versions and Seagrave. Ecstatic collected those tracks on the double-LP Dubs in 2017. The same year brought Jay Glass Dubs vs. Guerilla Toss, a remix EP drawn from the Brooklyn experimental post-punk band. Early 2018 saw the EP YMFEES, made with poet and musician Leslie Winer. Though much of the project's output carries a haunting, melancholic tone that addresses depression and disappointment, the 2018 EP The Safest Dub on Berceuse Heroique revealed a gentler side. Plegnic followed, an atmospheric set reflecting laiko (Greek popular music) and the classic era of 4AD. In January 2019 Bokeh Versions issued Epitaph, presented as the project's debut album, which included appearances by vocalist Yorgia Karidi and saxophone player Ben Vince.
