Biography
Jim Breuer first rose to prominence as an American standup comedian, radio personality, author, and performer through his four-season stint on NBC's Saturday Night Live during the 1990s. Subsequent screen work, multiple recorded comedy sets, and extensive touring, often backed by a full heavy metal ensemble, further expanded his career.
Valley Stream on New York's Long Island served as the setting for his upbringing, where he resolved to enter standup while still attending high school. Several years of national club work preceded a concentrated effort in New York City venues, which quickly yielded a spot on the syndicated Uptown Comedy Club series that aired between 1992 and 1994. The decisive opportunity came in 1995 with an invitation to join the Saturday Night Live cast. Motion-picture appearances soon followed, among them the 1998 Dave Chappelle- and Neal Brennan-penned Half Baked and 1999's Dick, which featured Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams.
Comedy Central broadcast his debut hour-long standup special, Hardcore, in 2002; the network's record label issued the program on DVD that September. The same label simultaneously put out the album Smoke 'n' Breu, on which Breuer performed AC/DC and Metallica material with live accompaniment. Additional film work included Crooked Lines in 2003, and in 2004 he launched a weekly satellite radio program initially titled Breuer Unleashed before it became Fridays with Breuer. His 2008 Breuniversity Tour brought his 84-year-old father to campuses across the country; footage from those dates formed the basis of the documentary More Than Me, which debuted at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival. Also in 2009, Comedy Central aired the special Let's Clear the Air.
October 2010 saw the release of his memoir I'm Not High (But I've Got a Lot of Crazy Stories About Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior). In 2011 he participated in the Anti-Social Network tour alongside Dave Attell, Bill Burr, and Jim Norton. Epix recorded the one-hour special And Laughter for All at Manhattan's Gramercy Theatre, with the program premiering in 2013. Metal Blade issued the 2016 music-comedy album Songs from the Garage under the name Jim Breuer and the Loud & Rowdy; the project featured guitar and production from Anthrax's Rob Caggiano, bass from Joe Vigliotti, drums from Mike Tichy, and guest vocals from AC/DC's Brian Johnson.
