Biography
Instrumentalist Johannes Linstead defies straightforward classification. Listeners have occasionally placed his bold, expansive acoustic guitar recordings in the new age category, though his energetic approach sets him apart from the genre’s usual restraint, while others have tagged him as nuevo flamenco, meaning modern flamenco-infused pop instead of pure traditional flamenco. Even though portions of his playing connect to Spain’s nuevo flamenco movement, that style forms only one strand of the unpredictable and broadly eclectic Linstead’s output. No single label captures his range better than world fusion. His influences draw from Spain yet also extend to Greece, Italy, Portugal, Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil, Peru, India, Morocco, and the Middle East. The majority of these rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic sources share origins in warm, sunlit regions rather than colder, wintry climates. Ironically, the guitarist himself hails from Canada, a country far removed from most of those sun-drenched locales, where he has repeatedly received the title Guitarist of the Year. Seven of his albums have reached the top ten on US Billboard charts, and he has claimed the People’s Choice award in the UK.
Frequent comparisons link Linstead to Ottmar Liebert, Lara & Reyes, Jesse Cook, Armik, and Oscar Lopez. His recordings reflect exposure to flamenco masters Tomatito and Paco de Lucía, Greek icon Manos Hadjidakis, Brazilian guitarists Egberto Gismonti and the late Laurindo Almeida, plus the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt and the fusion work of Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, and Al DiMeola. Although not primarily a jazz musician, he incorporates occasional jazz inflections. Beyond the acoustic guitar that remains his principal instrument, Linstead performs on mandolin, violin, bass, acoustic piano, electric keyboards, various wooden flutes, and the bouzouki. When selecting collaborators for studio and stage work, he favors stylistic variety, readily combining Indian tabla drums with gypsy violin.
His debut album, Sol Luna Tierra, appeared on the independent Real Music label in 1999, followed by Kiss the Earth in 2000, Guitarra del Fuego in 2001, and Zabuca in 2003. The fifth release, Mediterranea, emerged on Earthscape Music in 2004. In 2006 he issued two projects: Café Tropical, nominated for a Juno Award as Best Instrumental Album of the Year, and the Christmas recording We Three Strings alongside guitarists Bryan Lubeck and Tomas Michaud. That same year he established the humanitarian organization Divine Earth. The collaborative album Encanto with Nicholas Gunn reached number six on the new age charts. Mistico arrived in 2009, topping several World Music and Jazz/Blues charts while securing Best World Album and Best Instrumental Album – Acoustic at the ZMR Awards.
Linstead’s compositions have appeared frequently in television series such as Californication, The Following, Burn Notice, Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, Pawn Stars, and Person of Interest. Touring and media commitments occupied the subsequent three years. Tales of a Gypsy was released in 2012, attaining number one on multiple digital and streaming charts and earning three ZMR Award nominations. Two years later Midnight Rhumba entered the Top Ten on Billboard’s New Age chart and captured Best World Album plus People’s Choice honors at the UK’s OWM Awards. In 2017 Linstead delivered Azul, an album that balanced his electric guitar work with his nuevo flamenco approach; it earned most-added status in the smooth jazz category across numerous industry outlets and won Best World Music album at the Toronto Independent Music Awards.
