John Brown, a Detroit native, first cultivated his vocal skills at the age of eight while serving in the choir of his father’s church. Subsequent engagements with theater ensembles enabled him to perform the National Anthem at area sporting contests and to appear before former U.S. President Bill Clinton. After Brown and Robert Curry, who would later join Day26, learned of Wyclef Jean’s plan to recruit an act for his boutique imprint tied to J Records, they recruited two more singers to create E2G; the R&B quartet secured a deal with Jean yet disbanded before gaining traction. Brown later used Myspace to link with the independent Mophillin label, resulting in his debut solo single, “Imma Love You Right.” Produced by Bei Maejor (Trey Songz, Ginuwine) and Larry Nix (R. Kelly, Pitbull), the track appeared in 2010, registered as a hit on Detroit’s WJLB, and earned the singer a contract with Universal Republic. Preparations for Brown’s first album advanced with an eye toward release before the year concluded.
