Biography
John Fedchock stands out as a skilled bop-based trombonist who has earned equal recognition for his work as a big band arranger. He earned degrees from both Ohio State University and the Eastman School Of Music. During the 1980s he devoted seven years to performing and traveling with Woody Herman's Orchestra, where opportunities to solo arose yet his swinging charts drew the greatest notice. Additional road work took him alongside Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band, Louie Bellson's Big Band, and Bob Belden's Ensemble, among other ensembles. He has maintained an active presence as a clinician leading seminars and workshops, as a freelance soloist, and as a prolific arrangercomposer. His debut album under his own name, New York Big Band on Reservoir, appeared in 1992 and highlighted both his instrumental and compositional abilities. Over the following six years a consistent performing routine sharpened his technique while helping him cultivate a more personal voice, so that the 1998 release On the Edge marked a clear advance over its predecessor. Filled with drive and vitality, that album launched an ongoing series of recordings that encompassed the small-group date Hit the Bricks in 2000 and the technically impressive No Nonsense in 2002.
