Biography
Canadian singer, songwriter, and poet John K. Samson first gained recognition as the frontman of the introspective Winnipeg indie rock band the Weakerthans. In the early '90s he played bass in the Canadian punk outfit Propagandhi while issuing his own 15-song solo cassette, Slips & Tangles. By the late '90s he had departed Propagandhi to concentrate on writing and to establish a publishing company. Around that period he assembled the Weakerthans alongside drummer Jason Tait and bassist John P. Sutton, combining melodic indie rock with a more reflective approach to lyrics. Starting with the 1997 album Fallow, the group earned praise for its inventive style and politically engaged principles. The band later moved to the punk label Epitaph, where the 2003 release Reconstruction Site marked its commercial breakthrough, and continued to receive recognition with 2007's Reunion Tour.
In 2009 Samson once more turned toward solo work, issuing City Route 85 as the initial entry in a pair of EPs delivered via Epitaph. Provincial Road 222 appeared the following year and, consistent with much of his output alongside the Weakerthans, centered on his characteristically thoughtful, often melancholy attention to everyday detail within a folk-pop framework. During 2012 he revisited the songs from both EPs, supplemented them with new material, and assembled the collection as Provincial, marking his first complete solo album since the 1993 cassette. The record received broad critical approval and reached the longlist for the Polaris Prize. Also that year a volume compiling Samson's lyrics and poems was published. With the Weakerthans placed on official hiatus, he resurfaced in 2016 with the subsequent solo album Winter Wheat.
