Biography
Keyboardist and songwriter Jonathan Cain achieved Adult Oriented Rock prominence through stints with Journey, the Babys, and Bad English. Born February 26, 1950, in Chicago, he initially led the Jonathan Cain Band, which released its sole album, Windy City Breakdown, on Bearsville in 1977. The following year he stepped in for keyboardist Mike Corby with the British group the Babys, whose singles “Isn’t It Time” and “Every Time I Think of You” reached the charts. After that ensemble dissolved in 1981, Cain entered Journey ahead of the album Escape and stayed through the band’s split following 1986’s Raised on Radio. In 1988 he formed Bad English alongside Journey guitarist Neal Schon and former Babys vocalist John Waite; the supergroup notched major successes with “When I See You Smile” and “Price of Love” before disbanding in 1991. Cain then issued the solo sets Back to the Innocence and Piano with a View in 1995. He rejoined Journey for the 1996 reunion album Trial by Fire, then delivered the solo Body Language in 1997 and For a Lifetime the next year. Throughout the 2000s he balanced ongoing Journey tours with periodic solo releases. After 2006’s Where I Live his solo work paused until the 2016 album What God Wants to Hear and the 2017 holiday project Unsung Noel.
