Jonathan Rado channels a production aesthetic steeped in 1970s analog textures into his own recordings while simultaneously shaping albums for Weyes Blood and Father John Misty. Long before Foxygen dissolved in 2019, he had already expanded from his role in that 1960s-leaning indie duo into both behind-the-board work and independent solo projects, a trajectory that led to the 2023 release For Who the Bell Tolls For.

Born in California, Rado formed Foxygen in 2005 alongside teenage friend Sam France. Once the duo began issuing records on an international scale in the early 2010s, critical attention and media coverage intensified rapidly. Following an exhausting stretch of Foxygen dates that ran through 2012 and 2013, Rado declared plans for a solo album without ending the band. The resulting Law and Order appeared on Woodsist at the close of 2013 and revisited the same Brill Building, British Invasion, and late-1960s pop touchstones that marked his Foxygen material.

Concurrently, Rado entered production, drawing on techniques absorbed from mentor Richard Swift. His credits soon encompassed the Lemon Twigs, Whitney, Beach Fossils, Father John Misty, and additional acts. His contributions proved central to Weyes Blood’s Titanic Rising in 2019 and to contemporaneous Killers recordings.

After Foxygen disbanded in 2019, Rado concentrated on production duties. He had already issued a note-for-note rendering of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run in 2017, yet his next proper solo statement arrived with 2023’s For Who the Bell Tolls For. That album featured appearances from Lemon Twigs members, Pure Bathing Culture, and Lana Del Rey affiliate Drew Erickson.
