Born as Jason Watson in St. Louis, Missouri, Json entered the world as a Christian rapper. His formative period featured repeated encounters with gangs, drug addiction, and incarceration before he turned to faith as a born-again Christian and later entered the ministry. Watson launched his recording career in 2005 upon joining the Dallas-based Christian rap collective 116 Clique, at which time he also issued his debut solo album, The Seasoning, via Hid in Christ Ministries. A 2008 signing with Lamp Mode Recordings led to a succession of solo albums whose commercial reach steadily expanded, beginning with Life on Life. City Lights reached Billboard’s Christian and Gospel album charts upon its 2010 arrival, as did the follow-up projects Growing Pains (2012) and Braille (2013). Watson assumed the presidency of Lamp Mode Recordings in 2014 and delivered his subsequent album, No Filter, the following year.
