Biography
Born in 1972 to the celebrated copla vocalists Juanito Valderrama and Dolores Abril, Juan Antonio Valderrama, who performs under the name Valderrama, grew up dividing his time between Madrid and Seville. He completed a journalism degree at the University of Navarra and later joined a regional television station, yet a self-produced demo and an ensuing on-air appearance quickly drew offers from multiple record labels drawn to both his evident skills and his family background. The 2002 release La Memoria del Agua marked his debut and incorporated guest work from Ana Belén, Joaquín Sabina, Vicente Amigo, and his father, earning swift praise from reviewers and listeners alike. Valderrama continued issuing flamenco pop records while branching into acting, founding his own recording and publishing imprint, and contributing occasional journalistic pieces. Later projects revealed a shift away from pop toward Arab traditions on Moderna Tradición in 2009 and a deeper engagement with traditional flamenco on Sonidos Blancos in 2011.
