Biography
Born to soul singer Julius Cheeks, Judy Cheeks followed paths reminiscent of both her father and godfather Sam Cooke, though she overlaid those influences with the propulsion of '90s house and club music in place of classic sweet soul frameworks. Recording only sporadically throughout the 1970s and '80s, she sustained a full slate of work as a studio vocalist until early-'90s singles such as "So in Love (The Real Deal)" brought her notice on the Euro-dance charts. Respect became her first album of the decade, weaving in several earlier singles while highlighting production by Brothers in Rhythm, Roger Sanchez, and Love to Infinity.
